From 31st March 2025, all workplaces across England with ten or more full-time employees will have a legal duty to follow new legislation from The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. The new reform is set to standardise and increase recycling rates, reduce general black bin waste, and aims to simplify waste management systems.
The regulations will apply to all business and non-domestic workplaces, including offices, hotels, restaurants and other hospitality venues, retail and wholesale spaces, and educational facilities such as universities, colleges and schools.
To be compliant and correctly separate key recyclable materials from general waste, businesses will need to segregate refuse using multiple containers with clear labels to ensure unwanted items are correctly disposed of.

Paper and cardboard will need to be separated from other dry recyclables (plastic, metal and glass). All materials must be clean, dry and uncontaminated. Food waste will need to be deposited into a dedicated food caddy to collect biodegradable items such as fruit and vegetable peelings and general plate scrapings, as well as inedible food parts including teabags, coffee grounds, small bones and eggshells.

You may need to review your communications to help customers and employees identify what goes in the different bins. Clear signage of the bin locations and labelling the types of bins will be an instrumental measure in controlling and ensuring the success of the new recycling and waste policy. Many workplaces and institutions are not yet ready for this change.
Temporary signage will address the immediacy of labelling your bins in readiness for the end of March. We have the solution to this with our waste management stickers that can be used provisionally to encourage people to correctly deposit their rubbish and recycle in the designated bins. Our recycling stickers can be easily removed if required, without damaging the substrate underneath.
We can also assist with branded solutions to improve your recycling communications longer-term.
