International Wayfinding Month is observed throughout January each year.
Wayfinding was originally a method of navigation traditionally used by the people of Polynesia in the 1700s to help guide them when undertaking long journeys across the Pacific Islands. Modern wayfinding became more prevalent in the 1980s in architecture and signage, which paved the way for its dominant and powerful usage today.
Wayfinding strategies today encompass a series of principle components to ensure we can find our way through a built or natural environment. In spaces such as new buildings, shopping centres and office complexes, it would be difficult for users to find their way without the help of a wayfinding solution.
Wayfinding is important for providing orientation, direction, identification and information, particularly for the first-time user. Without it, how would you know where you need to go or whether you have reached your destination?
Cobal have been successfully implementing wayfinding signage and graphics for many years. We see wayfinding as an art and, when done right, it can extend a brand’s personality and enliven its environment.
